This year, around 32 schools will be asked to participate in the 2008 Western Australian Child and Adolescent Physical Activity and Nutrition Survey (CAPANS) to measure physical activity levels and dietary habits of children in Years 3, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 11.
Jennifer Riatti, project manager for the Premier’s Physical Activity Taskforce which coordinates the survey, says the results will be compared to a similar survey carried out in 2003.
“It’s really critical that schools get behind this project. We are relying on the support of teachers, students and parents to make sure the survey accurately reflects where we are at and what we need to do to tackle childhood obesity and physical activity in the future,” said Ms Riatti.
Letters will be sent to selected schools requesting participation in the collection of survey data over August.
