Workers' Compensation

The Workers' Compensation Officer provides a service to all employees of the Department in the following ways:

  • Providing information about workers' compensation procedures and regulations according to the Workers' Compensation and Injury Management Act (1981) and responding to queries that Departmental employees may have regarding workers' compensation, injury management, transfers or effects on leave entitlements.
  • Communicating with external agencies and internal (Staffing Directorate, District Office Support Officers, Managers of District Operations) parties regarding injured workers.

Claims Management

The Workers' Compensation Officer assists in claims management in the following ways:

  • Monitoring the costs of each claim in terms of medical expenses, legal expenses and time off work (salary expenses) and liaising with Insurance Commission of Western Australia (RiskCover) to determine the most cost effective path for each claim.
  • Determining which claims require injury management assistance in conjunction with Medical Practitioners and making the referral in a timely manner.
  • Providing an advisory role to external rehabilitation providers by discussing each rehabilitation case regularly with the Case Manager and making recommendations for rehabilitation programs. The Workers' Compensation Officer monitors each rehabilitation case to ensure that they are progressing satisfactorily. If they are not, it is the officer's role to flag these cases promptly and liaise with the Provider and RiskCover and the general practitioner as to the future direction of the claim, and if necessary, make a referral to the Department's Occupational Physician.
  • Ensuring timely finalisation of claims to assist in keeping the Department's active claims record accurate.
  • The Workers' Compensation Officer:
    • provides a link role between assessors acting on behalf of RiskCover and the Department;
    • attends conciliation and review procedures at the Conciliation and Review Directorate;
    • monitors delays in forwarding claim forms;
    • liaises regularly with external providers.
  • The Workers' Compensation Team:
    • refers claims to the Safety Officers;
    • maintains conditions of employment for claimants;
    • recoups salaries of claimants from RiskCover;
    • makes referrals to the Department's Occupational Physician.

If you have a query specific to your current claim, please call the appropriate Workers' Compensation Officer.
