The subsidy for optical aids is based on the Eyesight Screening and Testing Policy (October 2002), developed for Government Departments and Authorities by the Labour Relations Division of the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection.

In order to be eligible for the subsidy an employee must:

  • Be using a computer for at least one hour per day continuously or more than 10 hours per week.
  • Be a permanent employee of the Department or have been employed for at least 12 months.
  • Have certification that optical aids are necessary for computer work.

Employees are entitled to a subsidy of 50% of out-of-pocket expenses up to a maximum of $110 for the purchase of optical aids. Any costs associated with testing remains the responsibility of the employee.

Out-of-pocket expenses are calculated as the amount left after claiming your private health rebate.
