The Department's Safety Officers are available to visit the school site and provide advice and recommendations on lighting.

The basic requirements for adequate lighting are that the work must be easy to see and the light comfortable to the eyes. Illumination is measured in units of LUX - lumens per square metre.

Below are three examples of lighting requirements.

General background   200 Lux
Routine office work (typing, filing) 400 Lux
Work with poor contrast (proof reading) 600 Lux

You can gain further information on office lighting by contacting the Department's Safety Officers or refer to A Guide to Health and Safety in the Office (OHS 1) booklet.
